We are back

Blogging is fun. Blogging has value.

After many days of trying to understand the business value of blogging I came to the conclusion that only corporations that are not interested in marketing can ignore it.

I have seen people like Tom Peters do it. If Tom is in it who else can't do it.

Take time and learn about it it is fun.

You can visit Tom Peters Blog at www.tompeters.com This is a gem of a site you cant ignore.

ebusiness: What are web statistics?

Thursday, September 09, 2004

What are web statistics?

Many organizations that are serious about internet business need good web statistics. Web statistics experts divide these statistics into two. These are web metrics and web analytics.

Web metrics are about statitics of the entire or some sectors of the internet. Examples may include how many people browse the internet, how much money transactions are carried out daily, what are the key indicators of successful internet business etc.

Web analytics on the other hand are about statics of a specific website e.g who visted your site yesterday, where do you get most traffic on your site from etc.

Both of the these statics are very important. The metrics enable you to predict the direction of the industry in terms of internet business, make forecasts for your business, decide which new revenue streams to be included, judge and adopt best practices and a host of other decisions that are crucial based on raw data. They will also help you measure your performance based on your this data.

Web analytics are key in judging how well you are achieving your goals. They need to be analysed and judged against some preset benchmarks. One will need to have tailored statistics depending on your goals. Most statistics are useless either because they have no relation to your business goals or are badly interprated for the users.

When paying for extra cost of statistics first ask why you need them. Answering this question will then take you to the next one-which are the best statics to use and finallywhere do I get the best of them at the best price.

Looking for ebusiness skills, look no further

Lets face the fact -there are too few qualified people in IT industry. But they are even fewer who have any idea about e-business. That explains why we are continually seeing shoddy websites coming out in thousands every year. The skills are so little to an extent that even when organizations are hiring someone to be in charge of their website they dont know what they want.

Everytime a firm is hiring someone to take care of their web business they will talk of someone who is a MSCE or Unix expert or who has a degree i. IT or computer science or anything like this. What does this translate to ? Poor business performance, frustration with the web-based business and a continued waste of resources.

The situation is not helped by the fact that there are known institutions offering ebusiness courses and when they do they lean towards the technology side. The west is getting out of this. Ask the British Airways and they will tell it takes more than html, flash and java scripts skills to manage a world class ebusiness department. It is more than copying what you have on your hard copy bronchures to your website. It is not about beautiful colours and images. E-business is business done on the cyber world and business is about profit maximization.

If want to learn more of the necessary skills for ebusiness success just email me. I dont just give talk I will train your team on the necessary skills for doing ebusiness. I would audit your website and online business strategy and help you implement best practices for maximum profits.

My No. is 254721303864.

Ingredients for emarketing success

Many businesses whether offline or online are busy trying to make the most out of internet advertising their products and services. The internet offers such benefits that the traditional media couldn't.

The internet offers a firm the opportunity to reach the whole world. It is not limited by government laws or distance. The internet is offering such an opportunity to reach the rich right into their offices and living room. This means more market for you.You have the opportunity to make your case more convincingly at the least cost.

It does so at the least cost of any media. To reach the world in any traditional media you may have to consider CNN. You guess the cost!

It is unfortunate that firms in the developing countries especially the ones seeking the rich west are not advertising effectively on the net. The western consumer is doing most of their shopping online. The compare the prices and services online. If at all they dont find you there they may as well assume you dont exist.

Kenyans firms need to come up with strategies of emarketing. They require an online media buying plan. They need to do a thorough research before they consider advertising. They need to know what their customers are looking for online.

For success on the internet marketing a firm will require:

1.A website that works. One that is up to date and has a clear objective. A website with content that is well written both for search engines and searchers.
2.An emarketing plan both for promoting the website and the product/service they are offering. You will need to carefully select the media to use. The selection of the media is important since 80% of your success will be determined by 20% of the media you use. So you will spend your efforts and resources here.
3.A team of staff who understand the dynamics of internet business. This should be of the consultancy firms you will use.
4.World class service providers for all back end requirements.
5.You need to know how best to measure your efforts.

Without this your emarketing efforts will come to nought.

Promoting your website

Great sites are always being made. Wonderful sites with great content. Sites that are offering great services and products. But, they die a slow death. Why?

They are poorly promoted. They are either promted in the wrong places or not promoted at all. One person stated that doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. I can add that promoting your website to the wrong people is like winking at a blind girl. It is damn useless.

So where do you promote your website? On Nation's homepage? Probably yes. But is it worth it. Are you going to get returns on this expenditure. Many people on the internet have not discovered how important it is to know where to get their target customer.

But knowing where to find your customers who would be interested on what is your website you need to do your homework well to get them take action i.e click on your add. You need to motivate them whether through fear, guilt or gread you need to get them do it. Get the most appropriate message to them.

You will to be able to measure what you are seeking to achieve well. They talk about hits. Those lies called hits. You need to select the best metrics for your promotion campaign otherwise you will never know where your money is going to.

I should have started with this but I know you read first then act if at all you will. You should know your customer well.

What is there for me?

Most websites have one aim to recieve attention. No one browses the internet to give attention. The result is .....................most websites are a total waste of money.

On the cyber world people are extremely selfish. They come with one question. The question is, "what is there for me?" But what do they get in response. Please , please give me attention! What do they do?

They take of and run to your competitor seeking for an answer to their question.

If you dont design and develop a website from this point you are doomed to join the ranks of all the dot com failures. To escape from this and hold on to your vistors and lead them to take the right action..............just give them something of value. Give them attention.

Think of their highest needs and serve them. Give them a reason to stay and when they leave to come back. Make them remember you on their way home and a motivation to tell their spouses and friends about you.

But if your website is made to get attention. Then am sorry. You are in the wrong place. Go for fashion show!
